A massive thanks to everybody that worked hard last night to make the show the success that it was. We only got 8 bouts (all NSC) out of a scheduled 12 due to late pull outs, a no show!! and ‘unforeseen circumstances’, however the eight bouts that we did get on where all classics in their own way and a quality top night of entertainment. We made a tidy sum again for the club, happy days.

One skills Buster Male, winners Joe Fairley, Tommy Dolan, Ben Harvey, Cameron Lusted, close loses for Jake Musgrove & Jerry Connors and topping the bill with a well deserved win Tyler Davies. They all boxed with skill and bags of heart it was a real pleasure, loved it. C’mon you Smelters!!

Connors Hits Gold

Left to right-Tri Nations Gold Medallist Luke Connors with winning Brothers Tom and Jerry.

What a week it’s been for the National Smelting Co Amateur Boxing Club. The Shirehampton based club hosted its fifth show of the season at the Henbury Social Club on Thursday 14th of April which was kindly sponsored by Mr Declan Harrington of D & D Trophies. The club promoted an 11 bout bill with ten of the bouts featuring a boxer from the host club. Local MP and NSC club president Charlotte Leslie was on hand to cheer the clubs boxers on and hand out trophies.

Smelters head Coach Garry Cave reports “I thought we might be cutting the bill a bit fine with only 11 bouts but thanks to the great support from the visiting clubs we got them all on. We opened the show with three skills bouts featuring Smelters boxers Tommy ‘Gun’ Dolan, ‘Big’ Ted Philips, Max Morgan and James Allen which gave the newer boxers the chance to showcase their skills without the pressure of having to win or lose. All the lads boxed with composure showing variety in both defence and attack. We followed with eight competitive bouts seven with NSC boxers in them winning five and only losing two, Winners where Cameron ‘Cannonball’ Lusted, Ben ‘10’ Harvey, Sam ‘Smash’ Ash, and boxing brother’s Jerry ‘Mighty Mouse’ Connors and Tom ‘Tucker’ Connors” Informed Cave “Win or lose and most of them won I was pleased with all the lads performances , Cameron got his first win after training very hard in the gym, proving that hard work pays off, Ben Harvey landed some great body shots to force a third round late stoppage, Sam Ash returned after sometime out with a win, Both Jerry & Tom Connors put in very polished displays to beat two very experienced boxers from Poole ABC, Jake ‘Monster’ Musgrove and Shane ‘da Bomber’ Brown lost on points after both gave it their all.

Whilst brothers Jerry & Tom where boxing on the Henbury show, 12 years old younger brother Luke ‘The Force’ Connors unbeaten in six bouts was on his way up to Manchester to compete for England in the Tri Nations Tournament, which sees the National Finalists from England, Wales and Scotland all compete for gold. Luke was crowned National Champion after winning the Royal Navy Schools ABA Championships in Manchester the month before. Said Cave “We tried our hardest to get up to Manchester in time on Friday for Luke’s Semi Final but due to the heavy traffic unfortunately we missed seeing him winning the semi’s by a points decision over the 52kg Welsh Champion Liam Taylor. But we where there on Saturday to see Luke at his very best with a forceful display of none stop power punching when he won with a third round stoppage over the other English Rep Jamie Aramayo. It was a proud moment to see Luke on the podium with his gold medal whilst the national anthem was played. What an achievement for this young lad of only 12. Luke’s now eight bouts with eight wins National English Champion, Tri Nations Champ and Gold medalist as well as winning both his bouts boxing for England.”

The NSC train every Mon, Wed & Fri night from 7-8:30pm at their newly built boxing gym, next door to Avonmouth Rugby club at the end of Barracks Lane, BS11 9NG. All equipment is provided.
Connors Just Champion!

School boy boxer 12 years old Luke Connors of the National Smelting Co Amateur Boxing Club (NSC ABC) was back in action again Saturday. Luke nicknamed the ’The Force’ by club mates, competing in the Royal Navy Schools ABA Championship finals at the 52kg weight class in Manchester where he faced Warrington’s Jamie Aramayo of Phoenix Fire ABC.

NSC Head Coach Garry Cave reports “With Luke’s unbeaten run of five bouts five wins, assistant Coach Jeff Sharp and myself where both quietly confident that he could go all the way but after a hard fought first round Luke was surprisingly trailing five points to three. Jamie was big for the weight and physically very strong but by the end of the first round Luke was getting on top with his all action front foot style. Luke just went up another gear in the second round, he never stopped punching from bell to bell forcing the Warrington lad on to the ropes and corners where he landed a peach of a southpaw back hand causing Aramayo to lose his balance and fall into the corner post. Connors now leading 11 points to 8! The final round Luke was all over Aramayo landing both body and head combinations and winning the contest by an impressive 20 points to 11.”

Said Cave “For 12 years old it doesn’t get any better than that, six bouts six wins, National Champion and an England vest at his first attempt in the championships, its very early days for Luke but what a start to his boxing career. We’re all over the moon at the club for him; he deserves all the success in the world, he trains and boxes his heart out. He’s like a mini Manny Pacquiao, I’ve never seen a boxer throw as many punches in a round. It just shows what can be achieved with dedication, determination and a little bit of luck”.

Connors now moves forward to the Tri Nations tournament where he will represent England.

Boxing Connors Brothers Are Just Champion!

Southwest Champ Jerry & National Finalist Luke Connors.

Shirehampton based boxing club the National Smelting Co ABC (NSC ABC) had two of its junior boxers compete in the Royal Navy Schools Championships. Luke ‘The Force’ Connors 12 years old and brother Jerry ‘Mighty Mouse’ Connors 14 years old. Jerry who had won a Western Counties title last year went one better this year by winning a Southwest Title and reaching the National Semi Finals. Informed NSC Coach Garry Cave “Jerry boxed with skill and composure, winning by wide point’s margins in both the Western County Finals and the National Quarter Finals, but he met his match in the Semi’s held on Sunday the 20th at Farnham in Surrey where he boxed Jordan Flynn of the Repton Boxing Club in London in the 48-50kg class. Despite giving age, weight and experience away Jerry battled his heart and soul out to lose on points. As a coach that’s all you can ask for, he gave it his all and should be very proud to reach the last four in the country. He’s improving all the time and getting further in the champs, hopefully next year he’ll make the finals or even win them.”

Younger brother Luke went one better with a resounding win against Frank Edwards of Broad Street ABC in the 50-52kg class racking up an impressive 34pts -16pts win. Said Coach Cave “Luke just never stopped punching from bell to bell; he was like a little Mexican pro. He had Edwards wobbling twice during the three round bout for the Referee to step in with protection counts. With his all action no nonsense style he’s going to take some defeating. He’s won all five of his bouts and its going to take a very good boxer to beat him. Fingers crossed he can win in the Finals in Manchester to be held on Saturday 5th of March”.

The NSC hosts their third show of the season on Thursday the 10th of March at The Henbury Social Club, Tormarton Cres, BS10 7LN. Doors open at 7pm and boxing starts at 8pm. Tickets are priced £10 over 16’s and £5 for under 16’s and OAP’s and are available from The Henbury Club on 0117 950 6325, with a limited number available at the door on the night. Said Cave “ We had a cracking show there last November with a 15 bout bill all featuring a Smelters boxer, it was a complete sell out and one of the best shows we’ve ever put on. This one promises to be another fantastic night of boxing with a packed 15 bout bill of Smelters boxers along with some supporting Junior ABA championship bouts”.

The NSC train every Mon, Wed & Fri night from 7-8:30pm at their newly built boxing gym, next door to Avonmouth Rugby club at the end of Barracks Lane, BS11 9NG.
Smelters' Magnificent Seven

http://www.abae.co.uk/aba/index.cfm/news/smelters-magnificent-seven/

The National Smelting Co Amateur Boxing Club (NSC ABC) hosted their second sell-out show of the season last week at Henbury Social Club. Head Coach Garry Cave reports...

We had three young juniors compete in skills bouts; Cameron Lusted, ‘Big’ Ted Philips and Ben Harvey, five close losses, and a magnificent seven wins. All of the boxers, win or lose, were a credit to the club.

Junior bantamweight Luke ‘The Force’ Connors never stopped punching - from bell to bell. He must be one of the fittest boxers in the country. Junior lightweight Ben Smyth won his first bout in a very accomplished display, while junior lightweight ‘Dazzling’ Dan Shackell racked up his seventh win from eight bouts.

Junior featherweight Tyler ‘Tiger’ Davies reversed a loss from a couple of weeks ago at Trowbridge with some clever punch picking, and senior light heavy Matt ‘The Ostrich’ Nickerson got his first win under his belt with a second round stoppage victor.

Senior middleweight Shane ‘Da Bomber’ Brown came back from a first round standing count to stop his hard-punching opponent in the third round. Senior lightweight Tom ‘Tucker’ Connors had a comeback win after being out for several months with injury, with a very skilful display of counterpunch boxing.

A massive thanks to everybody that helped to make the show the success that it was.

Results

CAMERON LUSTED (NSC) V TOM UPSHALL (STURMINSTER) - Skills bout

TED PHILIPS (NSC) V AARRON BRADLEY (FROME) - Skills bout

BEN HARVEY (NSC) V ELLIOT OSMAN (LYDNEY) - Skills Bout

TOMMY DOLAN (NSC) LOST PTS V TOM DURRANT (PAIGNTON)

LUKE CONNORS (NSC) WON PTS V HUMZAH SAEED (CAPITOL)

BEN SMYTH (NSC) WON PTS V LIAM HOUALAN (PAIGNTON)

JAMES ALLEN (NSC) LOST RSC 3 V RYAN LLOYD (EMPIRE)

DAN SHACKELL (NSC) WON PTS V MARTIN PERRET (DOWNEND)

JERRY CONNORS (NSC) LOST PTS V OWEN O'LEARY (CAPITOL)

TYLER DAVIES (NSC) WON PTS V RYAN WHEELER (TROWBRIDGE)

SAM FITZGERALD (NSC) LOST PTS V JAKE TOOGOOD (FROME)

MATT NICKERSON (NSC) WON RSC 2 V JOHN MITCHELL (STURMINSTER)

SHANE BROWN (NSC) WON RSC 3 V MAX CRANAGE (CHARD)

TOM CONNORS (NSC) WON PTS V SHANE HAYWOOD (STURMINSTER)

REECE G-SHARP (NSC) LOST PTS V TIM CUTLER (EMPIRE)

Junior boxer of the night was Luke Connors he was awesome - like a mini Pacman.

Senior boxer of the night was Shane Brown - what a storming comeback and bout.

The venue was first class, food first rate, lots of rave reviews from all, especially the supporters and officials. In the first bout of the night was NSC’s youngest boxer 11-year-old ‘Big’ Ted Phillips boxing in his first skills contest, which are non decision bouts where both boxers have their arms raised as winners at the final bell. Informed Smelters head coach Garry Cave “These skills bouts are a great way of developing young boxers, it gives them the chance to learn the ropes without having to worry about losing. Ted boxed really well, showing a solid defence and good attacking combinations, he really enjoyed himself in an all action bout”.

In the second bout also making his debut was 11-year-old Light Flyweight Luke ‘The Force’ Connors a brother of seven, five of whom having all boxed for the NSC. Said Cave “I struggled to find Luke a skills bout but thanks to Golden Ring of Southampton who travelled with just one boxer we secured Luke a real contest versus John Chicken. I’d done a bit of homework so I knew John was a very strong young prospect with two previous quick victories but I had confidence in Luke’s boxing ability and toughness and he didn’t disappoint. The Golden ring boxer set a furious pace looking to force another early stoppage with a barrage of power punches but full respect to Luke he took everything thrown at him and just came firing back forcing his opponent across the ring”. After three very hard fought entertaining rounds, Connors won the bout on points.

Said Cave “I’m made up, for his first bout Luke really showed some bottle to beat such a strong opponent, Luke’s a real character to have in the gym and like all his brothers a very tidy boxer”.

Bout four saw NSC’s ‘Dazzling’ Dan Shackell matched against local Downend boxer Tom Williams. Cave said “Dan’s won his first three bouts so I was hopeful he could make it four straight wins but the Downend lad hadn’t read the script and boxed very well to win a close contest on points. You can’t win them all and Dan still put in a good performance, it will go again on another day, with a bit of extra hard training hopefully he’ll dazzle next time out”.

Bout five was NSC’s Western Counties Champion 13-year-old Jake ‘Monster’ Musgrove versus Swindon based James Richards of Penhill ABC. After three close rounds, Richards winning on points. Informed Cave “Jake doesn’t lose many and I know he was disappointed not to get the result but it was a good bout and we have him a rematch on the next Penhill show, he gave away a lot of height and reach but despite that boxed really well and as a coach that’s all you can ask for”.

Bout six saw Featherweight Dan Shackell’s twin 13-year-old bother James ‘El Toro’ Shackell matched against another Downend boxer in Martin Perret. Reported Cave “Neither of these lads wanted to take a backward step and what a war it was, with heavy blows exchanged on both sides. But as the bout went on James got the upper hand and scored with some big right crosses, blooding the nose of his Downend rival”. The Referee stopped the action mid way through the third round after Perret had received a couple of standing counts, Shackelll winning by RSC. Said Cave “James lost his first two bouts on close points, but he’s stuck at it, trained very hard and has now won his last four, it’s great to see all that work and determination now paying off for him”.

Next up for the Avonmouth based boxing stable was twice Western Counties Champion 15-year-old bantamweight Tyler ‘Tiger’ Davies boxing the taller stylish Louis Tinder of Penhill. “This is the third time these two young prospects have boxed, Tyler winning the first in a close bout, the second finished prematurely when Trinder turned an ankle and was unable to continue. After three great rounds of skilful boxing Tyler won a very close majority points decision off the judges. I know Tyler wasn’t convinced by his own performance, but he hasn’t boxed for a few weeks and did enough to win and this was a good chance to shake a bit of ring rust off” said Cave.. Tyler has a chance to win his third Western Counties Title on Saturday the 27th of March at Broadplain boxing club, Bristol where he meets for the first time Shane Haywood of Sturminster.

Last win of the night was secured from Welterweight Sam Fitzgerald with a convincing points win over Jamie Jones of Barnstaple. Said Cave “Sam is another boxer that trains hard he never misses a training session, after losing his first bout he’s won his last two and is shaping up, he’s really come in the last couple of months and is one to watch for in the future”.

NSC Light Welterweight Sam Smyth was unable get his third win in a row losing on points to Joe Hoskins of Downend. Said Cave “Sam boxed well and tried his heart out but was just beaten by the better man on the night, he should be proud of his performance, any club would be glad to have a lad like Sam, he’s a cracking young man and a pleasure to coach”

Summing up Cave states “It was a great family night out of boxing with 12 hard fought entertaining bouts, we got nine of our boxers bouts, losing four and winning four, two young lads had their first contests. It’s a great crowd at Pill Memorial Club they know their boxing and where very sporting to all the clubs boxers. A big thank you to all the boxing clubs and ABAe officials that supported this show”.

NSC host their next boxing show at Pill Memorial Club on Thursday the 20th of May, Doors 7pm, first bell 8pm, Tickets £10 over 18’s and £5 under 18’s Tickets will be available from May, Pill Club Tel. 01275 372176.
Two of Bristol?s oldest amateur boxing clubs combined again this weekend (July 18th) to raise funds for the local hospice. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Members of Empire and NSC ABC?S turned out in force to support popular ex-Empire amateur and current rookie pro Daniel Roberts who was spearheading the day in memory of a family friend who had recently died of cancer.

The day was organised by Empire Secretary Martin Bisp and took place in Broadmead, Bristol's main shopping centre.

To provide a focal point a ring was erected to attract the passing shoppers. The clubs put on some exhibition sparring and coaxed a number of passing youngsters to have a go on the pads and skipping + some of the brave ones tried to knock Daniel out during some light hearted sparring! Throughout the day hundreds of youngsters participated.

Promoter Chris Sanigar and current British Super Fly Weight Champion Lee Haskins turned up unexpectedly to lend their support. Haskins even brought his Lonsdale belt so youngsters could have their picture taken which resulted in queues 10 deep. Lee then brought the centre to a standstill with an impromptu session on the pads in front of the growing crowd.

After 3 hours the clubs had managed to raise in excess of ?880 and are currently trying to get a local company to make the money up to a ?1000.

Bisp said that the day was a great success with Roberts and the clubs raising a significant amount of money for the only local hospice which also cares for it's patients without charge. He added that he would like to thank Marks & Spencers and Starbucks who provided free refreshments throughout the day and to Boots who developed the photos.

Guernsey Trip

The team met at Bristol Airport for their lunchtime departure, all were in good spirits. A team meeting was held where Dave Dungay was selected as Captain, and the boxers intorduced to eachother. A good flight was particularly enjoyed by Mike Freeman and Jerry Connors, taking to the air for the first time.

Rooms were allocated at the Ambassador Hotel, and the host 'Basil' made us all very welcome. Soup and sandwiches followed before a gentle stroll into town.

All the boxers came in at the required weight, except T Maunder from Guernsey. This meant Rahim Nanji's bout was off, a real shame for a smashing young lad, who then took on the camera man role for the night. A team meeting was held for final instructions before the action started.

Bout 1

NSC boxer 'Mighty Mouse' Jerry Connors got proceedings underway against J Gilvear. A superb opening contest saw Gilvear edge a close points decision. A great effort from Jerry, just pipped after boxing well.

Bout 2

Walcots Tommy McDonagh oozed class against Alderney boxer C Sumner. A crunching body shot had Sumner down for the 8 count in round 1. Tommy piled on the presure and the style to ease home on points.

Bout 3

NSC's Bradley Collingbourne was going well against Gage Demore, until his nose started to bleed heavily. After 2 inspection from the referee, the coach withdrew his boxer as he was unable to stem the flow.

Bout 4

Broad Plain's Mathew Donnely and Alan Myres engaged in a toe to toe battle of attrition right from the start. This was a cracking contest, that went one way then the other. Donnely getting the nod to a standing ovation from the packed dinner crowd.

Bout 5

Cornishman Marcus Hodgeson faced tough Bradley Watson, who came out all guns blazing. After a torrid first round, Hodgeson rallied in the second. Round three saw Marcus on top, with stunning counter attacks and some brilliant footwork. Watson was on the receiving end at the final bell, but had done enough to win.

Bout 6

Forest Oaks boxer Mike Freeman faced J Woolnough who seemed to have his measure. Only a busy final round, where he never stopped working would be enough. Mike getting a majority win that could have gone either way. Very close.

Bout 7

Captain Sensible Dave Dungay from Devonport met up with W Calladine, who clearly wanted to take Daves head off. Dave stuck to his instructions in the final round, and forund the room for a stunning right cross. Calladines legs turned to jelley, and the referee waved it off. A great Captains performance.

Bout 8

Neal Herbert crossed swords with C Pearson, and seemed to have the bout under control. Three rounds of action with Mayflowers Herbert on top failed to impress the judges. peasron winning by unanimous decision to the amazement of the away camp.

Bout 9

The decider. With the scores level at 4-4, Mike Rose faced off against T Duff. Another super contest had the crowd on its feet, with Rose starting particularly strongly. The game Duff couldnt keep Rose away, and all three judges declared Fromes Mike, and the Western Counties team, the winner.

Both sets of boxers and coaches then met up back at the Ambassador for a buffet and drinks. Guernsey made us very welcome, and we were treated like kings for the entire weekend. Basil served up some top quality food and was a great host.

The boxers behaved well, and listened to the coaches instructions.

Team Manger: Alan Brightman

Coaches Steve Gawron and Les Brooking

PILL SHOW 9TH APR RESULTS

Smelters Magnificent Seven

The National Smelting Company held its forth boxing tournament of the season at the Pill Memorial Club on Thursday 9th April. The show was sponsored by D & D Shoe Repairs, who very kindly bought new tracksuits for the NSC boxing team. First to box in his debut bout was 11-year-old Orlando Rawlings in a non-decision skills bout. Said NSC Head coach Garry Cave "A skills bout is similar to a real contest but the empathise is more on skilful boxing over three rounds and not all out aggression. Both boxers get their arms raised at the end of the bout, so there's no losers only winners. They're a fantastic way of introducing young boxers into the sport, it really brings them on". Second on this 12 bout bill was 12-year-old Tom Cave, son of Garry, in his first competitive bout after previously boxing in three skills bouts, matched against Kyle Holden Of Mayflower ABC from Plymouth. Despite giving away height and weight and after a very hard going first round, young Cave started to find his range with good straight punch combinations and rack up the points to win his bout with a unanimous points verdict. Informed Cave "After the first minute I thought I'd got him in over his head with the size difference but he bit down on his gum shield and showed some bottle and pulled it out the bag in the second and third rounds".

Third up for the host club was Pilning's James Shackell facing across the ring in the blue corner Keelan Morris of Synwell ABC.

Reported Cave "James worked very hard throwing loads of punches, he really set a fast pace, a pace that turned out to be just too much for Kellan who was retired by his corner after the second round. I'm made up for James he lost his first two bouts and hasn't had much luck with results despite two very good performances. This should be a good confidence booster for the lad and was a well deserved win after all the effort he's put in at the gym and in his roadwork."

Next up for the Smelters and hoping to keep the club on a winning streak was 12-year-old Jake Musgrove versus Faz Macvey of Salisbury. Musgrove nick named 'The Monster' by his club mates was in ferocious form with his all action front foot style. Musgrove a Western Counties Schoolboy champ wasn't to be denied, forcing a third round stoppage due to relentless pressure and moves to five wins from eight bouts. Said Cave " Jake only boxes one way and that's full on, but he's also a very skilful aggressive boxer with a good defence, that always gives 100%". After three wins for the NSC it was down to 15-year-old welterweight Dan Wickins in his third outing boxing Aaron Chivers Of Salisbury. Dan had won his first bout two weeks previously at the Wells show in a bout that saw three knockdowns. Said Cave "Dan had one hell of a bout at Wells he shipped a couple of big punches but showed his mettle and put the other kid down in the second and third round to go on to win unanimous from the three judges. He boxed really well again in this bout showing great composure and picked his shots to win on points". Light welterweight Bradley Collingbourne had a torrid time against Dan Butler of Gloucester ABC. The Gloucester boxer was disqualified in the 3rd round for constant infringement of the rules. Informed Cave "What a horrible bout, Butler was constantly warned for holding, but full respect to Brad he kept his head and did his best versus an opponent that didn't want to stand and box" You can only box what's put in front of you and Brad showed good sportsmanship throughout". Bout nine saw local welterweights Terry Richards from Southmead lose on points to Dan Sarkozi of Bristol's Empire ABC. Richards struggled with the bigger size of Sarkozi in a bout at times that got a bit scrappy.

Said Cave " We where all a bit disappointed for Terry as we thought he had the tools to beat Sarkozi but Terry really struggled with the height and weight difference. But Terry was back to winning ways last Saturday where he was picked along with Southmeads light heavy Jo Ross to box versus a Jersey select team. Both got a win and to get a result out there was brilliant, the Western Counties Coach told me they both boxed brilliantly and where a real credit to the club and the Western Counties Boxing Team".

Stable mate Jo Ross was pitched in with the very useful Henry Roy of Empire, and after two hard fought rounds pulled out a peach of a left hook that caused a bad cut over the Empire boxers eye. Said Cave " You don't see that many cuts in amateur boxing due to the head guards and gloves at are designed to prevent them. Unfortunately, this was a deep one and the referee had no option to halt the action in favour of Jo in the third".

Last on the bill was Avonmouth first team rugby player and NSC boxer Liam Poole boxing at light heavy and winning pts in a very close hard fought bout versus Ryan Morris of Tiverton ABC with Poole landing the cleaner and heavier blows. That made it a very impressive nights work for the Avonmouth based club with seven wins from eight competitive bouts for the NSC.

The NSC has had two more of it's boxers in juniors Bradley Collingbourne and Jerry Connors who have both been selected to box v a Guernsey team in a rep match on Friday the 24th of April. The following night Dan Wickins, Jake Musgrove and Terry Richards are all matched up to box on the MYCON ABC bill at Nailsea.

The NSC host their next home show at the Patchway Sports Centre on Thursday June the 4th, doors at 7pm, first bell at 8pm. Matched against Joshua Mason of Bideford ABC the Tiger was ferocious from the opening bell, throwing power packed combinations and forcing a protection count, The 2nd round saw the Tiger start where he left off leaving the Referee with no option but to hand out another standing count and call the bout off in favor of Tyler Davies wining by 2nd round RSC. Said Coach Cave " Tyler is one of the quietest, politest and most un assuming young lads you could wish to meet but put the gloves on him and when that bell goes he's like a demon. We're all really pleased for him at the club he's put so much into his pre competition training and has reaped the rewards. Hopefully he'll do well in the next round also but win or lose like all the lads that get through the ropes to box he's a champion".
